Arriving in Lisbon from London, Basílio falls in love with his cousin Luísa, but he must go to Brazil, promising he will eventually marry her. As time goes by, he sends her a letter ending the relationship and she marries Jorge, an engineer. One of Jorge's rich aunts dies, leaving him a small fortune and her former maid Juliana. Juliana gets hold of love letters between Luísa and Basílio and starts to blackmail her employer.

Basílio returns from England and falls in love with Luísa, his cousin. However, financial problems lead Basílio to Brazil. Luísa and Jorge get married. Basílio returns to Lisbon.
Juliana is in a bad mood at work and complains about her job. Luisa receives a visit from Leopoldina, and Juliana tells Jorge about it, which irritates him. Joana is having an affair. Basílio visits his cousin.
Basílio visits Luísa every day, causing a stir in the neighborhood, which begins to speculate about the young man and woman. Sebastião makes a discovery about Luísa's past.
Sebastião and Julião discuss Basílio's visits to his cousin. Luísa can't contain herself and gives in to her passion for Basílio. Juliana snoops around the house looking for clues against Luísa.
Felicidade gets hurt, and Sebastião advises Luísa to visit the girl to put an end to the gossip, but the girl takes the opportunity to see Basílio. Juliana obtains evidence against her boss.
Basílio and Luísa's relationship begins to show signs of weakness, and the young woman puts herself in dangerous situations. Juliana finds the key to her boss's safe and has a copy made.
Juliana tells Luisa that she has her letters to her lover in her possession. Luisa despairs and takes drastic action. Vitória advises Juliana on the next steps of the blackmail.
Vitória orders Juliana to extort money from Basílio. Basílio leaves and returns to Paris. Sebastião makes a slip of the tongue, and Luísa discovers Jorge's possible betrayal.
Luisa has the idea of rummaging through Juliana's things to find her letters, but Juliana catches her. Jorge returns home, and tension hangs between Juliana and Luisa.
Luisa is experiencing a romantic atmosphere with Jorge's arrival. Juliana starts making demands, and Luisa has to convince Jorge to accept them. Jorge begins to find some things strange.
Jorge discovers that Luísa has been walking around poor neighborhoods in his absence and questions his wife. Juliana refuses to do the housework, and Luísa starts working in her place.
Luísa confesses to Leopoldina that she can no longer endure her current situation. Jorge discovers that Luísa was in a jewelry store. Joana delivers bombshell news about Juliana.
Julião discovers that Juliana has an aneurysm. Luísa asks Leopoldina for help to meet with Castro. But the meeting doesn't end well. Luísa and Juliana fight in front of Joana.
Juliana demands that Joana be fired. Luisa can't handle the pressure and tells Sebastião the whole truth. Sebastião devises a plan to help Luisa. Juliana has a nervous breakdown and collapses.
Juliana dies and Sebastião calls Julião to help deal with the girl's body, lying on the floor. Luísa becomes very ill. Jorge reads a recently arrived letter from Basílio to Luísa.
Jorge keeps the letter and Basílio a secret. Luísa improves and gets out of bed. Felicidade tries to win over Acácio. Jorge can't hold back and confesses what he knows to Luísa, who has another crisis.
